I don't have any help when it comes to expenses. What is Obama doing to help the new generation of higher education? I am looking at taking student loans out, but is there anything he is covering in terms of college? Programs? The stimulus bill provided a lot of extra money to the Pell grant program. This was necessary because the Department of Education relaxed many requirements to get these awards. For instance, the maximum amount of income to get a full grant is now $30,000 instead of the $20,000 it was for years. This means that more people qualify. For the first time also, it is possible to get two Pell grants in one calender year. The dollar amounts of Pell grant awards has risen and will go up even more if the Senate passes SAFRA as the President hopes.



For 2009 and 2010, there is a new college tax credit, the American Opportunity Tax Credit. It is worth $2,500. This is money that comes right off of what you owe in taxes and even if you owe nothing but have paid enough in college costs to qualify for the full credit, you can get $1,000 back.



A lot has been done and more will be done, but even as the federal government is helping, the states are cutting their aid so much that people cannot feel these gains.What is Obama doing for college students in need?
