Why is Obama backtracking on his support for the Ground Zero mosque?

Obama has gone against the will of the people on every issue so far, why backtrack now? Is the stress of so much failure making him crack? Why is Obama backtracking on his support for the Ground Zero mosque? For political reasons.

His second statement about not commenting on whether it was wise to put a mosque so near to Ground Zero was ridiculous. If any conservative had come out and said that, say, the Westboro Baptist Church had the legal right to protest soldiers' funerals, but didn't say that he found the practice highly offensive, he would have been understood to have not had a personal, moral problem with their actions and would have been (rightly) crucified in the media. Why is Obama backtracking on his support for the Ground Zero mosque?
I do not think he was backtracking at all. He meant what he said it is legal to build the mosque. Gees, I think we all knew that. But it is a sensitivity issue for Americans. He should have said yes, they have the Right to build it but it would be better to move it to another location for respect to the Family members who lost their loved ones on 9/11.

He uses our Constitution against us all the time. He will trash it for his use or use it for his use.

He is going down ...........Why is Obama backtracking on his support for the Ground Zero mosque? It was stupid of him to address it at all. Even as veiled and tangential as his comments were, they were correctly attributed to support the right of the mosque to be built. While the position is correct (the mosque can be built but should not be built) his poor construction of his comment and the venue of the comment has caused a firestorm. Why couldn't he just keep his mouth shut? The wheels were already moving to have this work out correctly (NYC would support the right of the group to build their center but public opposition was clearly having an effect on the supporters of the mosque itself). Now the topic has been reenergized at a point where such energy will inhibit a solution rather than help it resolve.

Either a) Obama is stunningly stupid, a contention that while it seems to have plenty of evidence does run counter to his academic record, or b) Obama is stunningly tone deaf (the evidence here is voluminous) and/or c) this is an attempt to keep bias and hatred on the front burner as we approach midterm elections.

I tend to lean towards c) as current stories of bias and hatred will serve to fire up the Democrats base. There was almost a calculated clumsiness in the statement and its sorta semi-retraction-clarification that followed. It seemed almost to be a goad to bring the anti-Islamists to attack him thus making him the target of clear bias and hatred. How cynical is that? Goad those who don't hate you to attack you because they hate someone else just so that you can say you are a victim of discriminatory hate. I can't wait to have a government that doesn't play this game.
I don't see it as backtracking.

I see it as another clumsy display of marginal statesmanship.

He has no ability to relate to the average American so he falls back on his core competency, lawyering.

He made his argument with the law.

1. 9-11 victims never mentioned the law. They mentioned respect and decency. He's obviously not comfortable in that discussion so avoided it.

2. It's never a good idea for the President to get into the finer points of an argument with the American people. Who in their right mind would nit-pick with their boss to try and make him look stupid? He simply does not accept the fact that he is a PUBLIC SERVANT.Why is Obama backtracking on his support for the Ground Zero mosque?Anyway the wind blows. These career politicians don't believe almost anything they say. They are given very carefully crafted scripts.

I'm talking about both parties. The two parties may talk differently on the idiot box and the media helps sell the public on the differences. It's so people think they have choose. But the truth is, both parties are the same. Look at the major issues like war, debt, and the ever growing consolidation of centralized power in Washington and they are exactly the same.

Anyone who believes what they are being told by these criminals in Washington is nothing more than a sleeping sheep following the Shepherd right to the slaughter. Why is Obama backtracking on his support for the Ground Zero mosque?
Obama says STFU this is my job not yours and soon this will be Obama-land so have a nice day fools, You should have voted for the old guy and the hot chick but you wanted the mysterious black dude ha ha ha ha ha ha hows that hope and change working out for ya wink wink//
Jim Sock stated my position well, so I'll only add...

Because Obama acted stupidly. Heheh.

Why that isn't the next big thing like "it's the economy, stupid" I don't know...

(fill in the blank GOP 2012 poster) "Send Obama back to Illinois....because he's acting stupidly".Why is Obama backtracking on his support for the Ground Zero mosque?
He is making a fool of himself. It would have been wiser to just stay out of the issue altogether but he can't help running to the rescue whenever a muslim is in trouble.
He isn't. He's just delineating the difference between having the legal right to do something and the wisdom of doing something.
I think it was very stupid of him to weigh in on it at all.

He's the President, not an NYC official. He has no say at all in what happens.
Spineless and mislead would probably sum up his presidency thus far.
He is weak, his administration is irresponsible, and America is not the country it was 40 years ago and back. Need I say more?
Please go to a bona fide news source and you will see exactly what the president said. Once this has been filtered through Fox, you're not getting the real story
he said it was legal, most americans agree...

"america has always been a muslim country"...-0bamao
Because he showed more of his true colors than he intended too.
Possibly his Muslim faith is not that strong.
People took his words out of context.
Let's watch the fool try to tap dance his way out of this one!! LOL......
