Is Obama changing the policy on suspected terrorists a slap in the face to the 911 victims' families?

Barack Obama described Guantanamo as a "sad chapter in American history" and promised to have the prison to be closed down within a year. He is changing the policy on suspected terrorists and thus, the detainees will have a fair trial in the American court system.

I'm curious to hear all your opinions on how you feel about this. Do you all feel this is a slap in the face to Americans and to the 911 victims' families. Feel free to state your opinion. Is Obama changing the policy on suspected terrorists a slap in the face to the 911 victims' families? You can bet it is a slap in the face, and he needs to be slapped in the face by each and every family that lost some one on 911. What the heck did people expect from a person, Obama who has terrorist connections and terrorist friends. You can bet he was PAID from the country the terrorist are from to do exactly this, but he had to brainwash his followers first......he did and now he is going to release cold blooded killers. Mr. Obama has not seen any thing, wait until all his bs ends up causing a up rise against the government. It is not far away.Is Obama changing the policy on suspected terrorists a slap in the face to the 911 victims' families?
I think its a little biased and somewhat hypocritical of you to ask the opinion of people and then choose an answer which suits your interests.

Is Obama changing the policy on suspected terrorists a slap in the face to the 911 victims' families? No, I don't think so. We are supposed to be the beacon of hope to the world, the great example to all people. We have principles that this country was found on and one of them is a fair and just trial - that which these suspected terrorists have not had in over seven years. They may not even be guilty, but we will not know this until they are tried in a fair court.

Granted they are not American citizens, but that does not matter. Many people are quick to judge them, but no one really knows if any of these people are guilty or innocent.

One man from this prison even 'confessed' that he was guilty because he just wanted to get his life in that place over with. Imagine being locked away for SEVEN years with no hope of ever leaving.
Yes. Some of the torture and humiliation that the detainees endured was uncalled-for. That's not the American way. However, these detainees shouldn't be given rights afforded to American citizens. They're prisoners of war, suspected of being involved with 9/11 in some way. They should be treated as war criminals, and that is not up to the American Justice System.

Our Constitution is meant to protect OUR citizens, not people who threaten our freedom. Is Obama changing the policy on suspected terrorists a slap in the face to the 911 victims' families? For a start off this is a prison run by the military, too much has come out on the willful abuse of prisoners to allow them to be put in this role. If you have a case against them, then take them to court and throw them in a Federal run penitentiary, death sentence or what ever. You do not let them sit in there little sunny haven in Guantanamo, which the tax payers are paying for, that is a slap in the face. Questionable cases can be given back to their countries government for prosecution. Many would probably ask for asylum then be returned to their own country. Is Obama changing the policy on suspected terrorists a slap in the face to the 911 victims' families?
How could a fair trial, the very cornerstone of democracy, be considered a slap in the face to the 9/11 victims? The victims of 9/11 were victims for the very opposite reason....that their terrorist murderers did not live or abide by the laws of a democracy. Any other action would put us on their low standards. What exactly would you propose instead? Hanging them without a proper trial to determine guilt or innocence? it is not wise of any country to act on emotion. We have a constitution and a way of life that must be upheld even in the worst of situations.
Honestly, I would hope it would not be taken as a slap in the face. I would hope that the families of 9/11 victims and the rest of Americans would want to truly find who facilitated 9/11, and punish them accordingly, rather than simply throwing a bunch of men in prison forever without confirming with a trial that they are indeed guilty. Is Obama changing the policy on suspected terrorists a slap in the face to the 911 victims' families?
Those are his brothers over there, the muslim countries did give over 50 million dollars to Obama for his campaign and now he has to start paying it back with favors, I wonder what favor he will do next for his friends with the same mutual interests as he stated in his speech? Obama is not slapping the 9/11 victims in the face he went straight for the groin area and went hard it would have been harder but his ears cause got caught in a updraft.
iraq was the big slap in the face, Iraq had nothing to do with 911 and the death count is huge, so the direct victims of 911 had to see victims of the Iraq war,

there is little difference of a high rise tower going down and loosing a loved one on 911 or an apartment building or house being bombed and loosing a loved one.

we need to heal from 911 cause i think bush used and abused it, and the result was more hurt, we never moved on, well now is our chance.

most in Gitmo are low level nobodies who at the worst were defending their country from the U.S. they have families who care and were put into this situation like we were on 911.

if u have C-Span there is vigorious debate on gitmo to watch and everyone needs to work together to figure this mess out cause not everyone needs to be another victim of a handfull of terrorist.

good question...
What does the Prisoners at Guantanamo bay have to do with 911. In case you have forgotten, it was us who went over and invaded their country which in a way makes us the terrorist. We all know that Bush went over for his own personal reasons. In our judicial system a man is innocent until proven guilty. how can we defend keeping them in prison when they haven't had a trial. How would you like it if you got accused of something and had been in jail for five years on suspicion.
Just the opposite.....I think he honors the families of victims of 9-11.......unlike Bush.

By upholding our laws, and not letting TERRORISTS change them, or make us SHRINK from OUR values........That HONORS those killed.

He also laid out extensive plans for actually dealing with Pakistan, and the tribal regions, and maybe actually FINDING the guy that attacked us and KILLED those Americans............something Bush had 7 years to do.......and never gave it a second thought.

And by closing the detention camp at Gitmo.......he lives up to the full ideals and laws of THIS country. Swift and FAIR trails........present your evidence........if found GUILTY of something.....you are duly sentenced to serve your time for your crimes. If they have NOTHING on you........then let them go.

You would demand nothing less if you were detained by police.

Press your charges......have your day in court, or let them go.

Obama is wise indeed. And he knows THE LAW. Unlike Bush.
Though I do not feel that terrorist should have any rights. I am a die hard constitutionalist. They must need be brought to justice I more so would like to see military tribunals. But no I do not see this as a slap in the face to the 911 victims families but maybe a little peace of closure for those that are being held there in connection to 9/11. But I am not one of the victims families so my opinion will really not matter in that question
no i don't think its a slap in the face. You must believe in double standards all he is saying is American don't agree with the type of torture that goes on there. We go to other conutry's because we say they don't treat people fairly but yet we are doing it ourselves that my dear is doouble standards it has nothing to do with the families of 911
What good will it do on torturing suspected terrorists? Unless you have some sort of weird fetish of people being tortured after you lost someone. We have to set the example that we don't resort such lowbrow tactics such as torturing on any one we think is the enemy. If we don't, then how are we any better or different then the enemy we consider to be evil?

Besides don't you think this is a even bigger slap in the face when George Bush said this.

"The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. It is our number one priority and we will not rest until we find him." 鈥擶ashington, D.C., Sept. 13, 2001

Then said this barley even a a year later.

"I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority." 鈥擶ashington, D.C., March 13, 2002
I'd say these 911 people died for our country. And in our country we believe in "innocent until proven guilty" and NOT in throwing random people in jail forever without a trial or even saying what they are guilty of. Guantanamo itself was a slap in the face to the 911 victims.
I can just imagine their reaction now...

"I don't care that they've never been charged with a crime! I don't care that it's unclear if they had any involvement in 9/11! Someone somewhere killed my loved one, and for that I demand indiscriminate torture of people I've never met!"

I think that's almost exactly how they would react...
Why would giving prisoners a free trial be a slap in the face to anybody? Not giving prisoners a free trail is a slap in the face to the framers of the Constitution.
Your question makes no sense. Why would giving people a fair trial be a slap in the face of the victims? Is revenge in a kangaroo court honoring the victims?? I thought the rule of law was what made us different from Saddam's Iraq?

Wow, The republican says, "However, these detainees shouldn't be given rights afforded to American citizens. They'ree prisoners of war, suspected of being involved with 9/11 in some way. They should be treated as war criminals,"

-That is a scary statement. What happened to "innocent till proven guilty? Why should they be treated like war criminals if they have not been proven to be criminals yet. If they CAN be proven to be criminals than bring the case to court and convict. THEN they will be war criminals.
What about families of some of the detainees who are innocent. What if your husband was held there without charge? This has happened with terror detainees.

One could argue why violate human rights when we're sending soldiers into battlefield in order to restore human rights in foreign land?
Huge slap in the face. Very insulting and hurtful.
You should give Ann Coulture a call.
Yes, its a slap in my face.

Shoot Shoot Kill Kill.....
IT SURE IS BUT DOES NOT SURPRISE ME ONE BIT.
What'd you expect? He has Ayers as his best pal!
HITMAN - that is really cool that Washington DC can talk. It would actually be better if you quoted a person, not an entire city because if citys, states and nations could talk we would not have so much confusion as to majority opinion. With that being said, I don't like obama and all he is trying to do is make a stir. He also, has put the nation in a bit of danger by tightening the reigns on the CIA and their tactics. He is socialist, obviously, and it is really starting to show, especially with him already appointing two lobbyiest after only holding office for 2 days, when his campaign stated he would not do that. I hope he does turn the economy around, however, the common law of economics states that there will be ups and downs and mostly we do this, although not as drastically as recent times, in 4-6 year cycles. So he will be given credit for economic equilibrium when it is just a cycle. However, if he implements some of his socialistic views, he could very well drive this economy even further into a recession and all of his "bailouts" that give big paychecks to his buddies, are going to have us paying HIGH taxes for the next 10-20 years. Where do you think we are going to pull 1 trillion dollars from, obviously not the greedy governments pockets. Also, why would someone spend almost a billion dollars campaigning for a job that does not even pay close to a million a year? Fishy? I think so. I definitely would not go spend 100 million on an education to become a doctor, it just does not make business sense. Obviously there are some serious perks that come in the form of under the table benefits of being the prez. Just hope all of the fishy Illinios crew does not screw this country. Oh BTW Illinios - High taxes, Unions, horrible economy, turning socialist, where is obama a senator from? You do the math.
